Naming is critical…

Hello! I am looking for two new Texas teachers (0-5 years) who would be interested in participating in a study I am doing as a Doctoral Candidate at Baylor. The study looks to understand the experiences women working in the field of education have had that triggered shame and explore their resilience. If you are interested, click the link below to get started: bit.ly/ShameResilienceStudy
If you have any questions feel free to email me at stephanie_asselin1@baylor.edu.
Best,
Stephanie Asselin

I'm white, and I think we could use a lot more "anti-white messages" around here, starting with an accurate description of our country's history.
People of color ARE oppressed victims. Racism in this country runs very, very deep and has a long history; educators often perpetuate racist (and sexist) mindsets without even realizing it.
There's a difference between being a helpless victim, though, and knowing you're at a disadvantage and actively fighting it.
That's what this group is trying to do--or help others do.
Also what is some people's obsession with "handouts" and that getting help is somehow harmful? This was obviously created by a conservative...
If you refuse to teach American history in truth- quit!
I agree with you New Jersey. I am also white. I was taught about privilege with one sentence. ¨When you donate a box of dry food, such as Hamburger Helper, you assume that they have a working stove.¨ While poverty does not see color, there are certain assumptions that each of us make when thinking about other races. Those assumptions are what we must address. When I assert that I am not a racist, the chances are that I am. To be anti-racist is to combat the unknowingly racist people out there. We must teach the change that we wish to see. I choose to teach by example that racism is a devaluing of another human being.
The thing that concerns me is that history will go back to the way it was taught to me. Looking back, I feel that American history was taught as a bedtime story as opposed to what really happened. I think we do students a disservice by glossing over the painful parts of our history. There are many outstanding children’s books and lesson plans that do an incredible job of teaching students about the struggles of the past and inspiring us all to be better human beings. I’ve learned more about history from reading powerful literature and discussing it with the students than I ever did when I was in school.
MHS- you clearly have no clue what your talking about. Sad to see! And, to see you post this on a site that promotes Critical Race Theory for all the right reasons.
OP, this is white fragility. People of color are taking back the narrative and that makes us powerful-- not victims. We have been victims of systemic racism, exclusion, and discrimination.
If people are offended that whiteness, historically, has been problematic and dangerous, that is white fragility.
