This is one of those conversations we Antiracist Educators need to have. @NJES1, Is there a difference between advocating for black students, and supporting BLM? Must they be connected? Can they co-exist? What do we think, AEs?
In my district, a teacher would be told to take down a BLM flag--but they are also told to take down the Confederate flag as well (and believe me, there are a lot of those...).
I agree that we must support our students of color.
While I appreciate the sentiment, and I appreciate the gesture, Donofrio is the face of the district. In our teacher's handbook, it says that we cannot engage in political activities while on school time. I imagine that her district has something like that as well. She was in violation of that policy. I do think that they took it too far in firing her, but I would say that she should've been asked to take down the banner before being fired.
NJES1--The sad fact is that the issues have been politicized. If I thought that I could go to work and not get sent home, disciplined or fired, I would also wear a BLM shirt. But, given the fact that I signed a contract saying that I would abide by the terms listed in the teacherś handbook, I would be subject to discipline or removal. That is the point of having a teacher's handbook. I am certain that every district lays out what teachers can and cannot do, what they can and cannot wear.

@Arkansas, really appreciate your input. At my school-site, our Principal (who has since left for greener pastures 💸), really was an advocate for justice for all students and pushed our campus culture in that direction. Now that he is gone...we shall see what comes next. As teachers, we’ve discussed that it is necessary for us the continue our growth and establish the culture on our campus. But, at the same time, we are biting our nails in anticipation of what may come with a new Principal.
