Congratulations! You got this 👏🏻✨
Congrats!! And good luck!
I feel like because I started with a clean slate with a new role I was very much put at an advantage. But the best thing I did was give people a script for what to do when they get it wrong (because we all do at some point or another): acknowledge it, correct yourself and move on. No self-flaggelation please, it only makes us feel weirder! Folks really have taken to it and have gotten much better at catching themselves too :)
Hmmm yes I need to think about this! Yes the pity party is embarrassing for all involved haha good point!
Congrats on living your truth! I’m nonbinary and I’m still trying to find the courage to change mine. It’s funny because I’ve been working on pride campaigns all month long, and have heard over and over again how my agency supports the LGBTQ+ community... but part of me worries that despite the agency publicly showing support, my coworkers still won’t be comfortable changing their language and will continue using she/her. I really need to come out though, because it’s consuming my thoughts and draining me mentally to continuously be misgendered.
How did you go about updating yours?
Email signature is a great way for people trying to be slow about it, but I personally found a conversation with a direct report to be the most helpful because of the trust I had established.
It's easiest to self-advocate when you have answers to their questions already like what to do when you're misgendered and someone feels bad about it or suggesting people put their pronouns in their zoom call or something to help normalize. If they're really good they may have some questions but their HR team should have ideas on how to support as well.
Congratulations! I’ve removed my pronouns from everything (email signatures and slack) while I work mine out. I’ve gone from being very pro pronoun sharing to realising how that can feel exposing if you’re not comfortable sharing yours yet. I’m doing a panel discussion for pride next week though so I’ve been trying to work out how best to declare my pronouns in that context. I think what I’ll do is ask people to use my name while I’m working out my pronouns. The bit that’s uncomfortable is outing yourself through omission when you’re still questioning and it’s all a bit overwhelming.
