OP: there will several great systems and other great tech such as Mercury that will allow us to reduce our time on each project. I agree that we should be worried but I assure you that it will take time. I heard, several times since 2004, that all tax compliance work will be fully or near fully automated within 10 years. It has been 15 and I haven’t seen much progress in that front yet.
They are not underpaid if they show up to work. It isn’t forced labor. It is supply and demand
If you joined public accounting for the money (unless you’re trying to make partner) then I feel sorry for you. As you progress it seems like you use even less of your knowledge and more of your project management skills. I think this experience is super valuable to employers in the industry. Once you get experience at big 4 you can leave and get a job where you are compensated accordingly for your experience and education. Only thing keeping me motivated.
Well it's fine for making good money as a jumping off point. But agrees that public starts to not be worth it vs. your time and effort unless you're a guaranteed partner...
