Honestly, I don’t put much weight on letters of recommendation unless they’re saying the candidate is the best employee or coworker they’ve ever had. Is there anyone in the office that holds you in that high of regard (or would at least be winning to claim they do)? If so, go with them.
Middling reviews won’t catch anyone’s eye and can only hurt. The reviewer can even be someone on your same level, like another junior associate, as long as they’re willing to say you’re exceptional. No need to get someone with a fancy pedigree if they won’t sing your praises.
Also- network with current and former AUSAs as much as possible while applying. That will take a lot of pressure off your letters.
Thanks for the advice, hadn’t considered someone at or around my level.
Looking for some guidance on what may or may not make an impact, and suggestions on who to ask, given my current firm would probably not take the news as a positive that I would be leaving (even though I would definitely consider coming back after a run as a prosecutor). I have the pedigree to at least get a reviewers attention (top 10% from a t-14, started at vault 50 firm, now litigating at a well known boutique, not to brag, just context) but concerned about my letters of rec being “meh” strictly because of my situation. Thanks for any responses!
