Thoughts on teachers losing their jobs because of something they post on social media or other online activities? Is it really reasonable for teachers to be held to higher standards in their off time? If someone wants to share their beliefs on their personal SM profile or earn extra money online, why should they lose their teaching jobs because of it?

You have freedom of speech however, there are repercussions for your actions regardless of where you work. Basic cyber security 101 is don’t post anything in SM you aren’t proud of. People are showing their true character and if said teacher/employee is spewing hate toward our country etc., I certainly don’t want them teaching my child, they don’t represent the kind of behaviors we want emulated from our youth. That goes for any business, health care etc.

Absolutely they should. How can anyone celebrate and be happy about a man almost getting his head blown off just because his beliefs are different than yours. If you’re ok with this then something is very very wrong with you and you not be anywhere near a classroom much less teaching kids anything.

Teachers are supposed to be examples of decorum, logical thought, quality behavior, and dignified speach. Teachers are expected to lead and guide children into becoming high quality adults themselves. A college degree is not enough. Teachers are expected to embody the qualities that are "above and beyond".

What teachers post on their social media gives insight into the type of individuals they are. School boards, admin, and parents are allowed to decide what types of people they want training and helping to form their students/children.

I think we’re missing, or maybe ignoring, the heart of the issue. The “right to privacy,” if such a right exists, is forfeited the moment you make a private act or comment public. It’s why we all made fun of the prince and the actress when they said, “We want our privacy! Buy our new book!” We’ve known for decades now that nothing you post online is private. If there’s something you don’t want the world to know, don’t put it on the internet.

As I said earlier, I’ve changed my opinion on this, especially having my own kids go through public school. I have a vested interest in the kind of person who gets to fill their brains every day. What they say publicly matters. Consider the following questions.

1. Are there any opinions that you think would disqualify someone from being entrusted with children? Bear in mind, I already know the answer is “yes,” because several have been itemized on this forum.
2. Is it any different for a teacher to say something objectively terrible (i.e. condoning unprovoked violence) on social media than to say it on a street corner or in a shopping mall?
3. At what point does behavior outside of work become a liability for the employer?

Before we board the fascism train, stop and think what a parent of a young child would think if they knew the person they're entrusting their young impressionable children to is an advocate for murder. Now you're that teacher's employer. You think he or she represents the values of the district? I wouldn't. Sure doesn't seem to be the type you'd want responsible for “social emotional” learning. So, maybe let's drop the libertarian absolutism when it comes to freedom of speech and understand that teachers should demonstrate some moral compass in order to be considered qualified to guide children.

That’s a great question bc technically we do work for the government. I read about a lawyer in Iowa who argued that a firing could violate first amendment protections for freedom of speech after a teacher (in Iowa) was put on leave for saying something about Kirk. The lawyer claimed that bc the school district is the government, it can’t punish employees for stating a neg opinion on a SM site on their own time if it’s not directly related to their job. Now, if the teacher mocked a student, parent, or other staff members that would be different.

Peter Riley , lawyer implied that the school district has to show ‘good cause’ for the firing. If their only reason for terminating the teacher is: ‘We didn’t like what you said’…..they will have an uphill battle that will most likely end unsuccessfully for the district

I mean if teachers/educators really are legally protected, and they are fired, they should fight it in the courts.

I do find it frustrating that teachers are being held to such high standards. I would get it if they were sharing their political views to their students in the classroom. However, we have as much right to our privacy outside of the school as anny other employee does in any other industry.
