There will be times you have to prioritize... always pick your spouse. Your job will change, your spouse (hopefully) won’t. Many times I’ve been swamped with work, long nights, deadlines, etc. But if something important is going down at home, I’ll find someone to cover for me.
A few years ago my wife’s grandfather (who pretty much raised her) passed away. My firm wasn’t really supportive of me heading out of town for the funeral but I did anyway. I caught a little shade from team members initially, but it all died down. Supporting my wife was clearly the only choice.
On the flip side, a buddy of mine a few weeks ago had to miss HIS SON’S BIRTH because his team had a client meeting they couldn’t miss. Turns out when the client meeting was rescheduled and he has to live with the fact that he put work over family in one of the most pivotal times in his family’s life.
