When we flew with car seats, we used them on the plane. It's the safest spot for your toddler, and in my experience, helps them fall asleep during the flight :)
Car seats are so short lived.
As kids grow, you have to buy new ones. Then no one takes them when you are done with them for liability reasons.
Ours didn’t get banged up from checking them - but honestly wouldn’t have mattered if they got some scratches. Kids were onto the next set so fast.
Boosters last a little longer - but honestly they are pretty indestructible.
Our car seats have never gotten banged up, but they are HEAVY and it will be a lot to drag them from baggage claim to rental facility, depending on how many bags you have. We borrowed a lighter travel car seat from a neighbor and are definitely team light travel car seat. We still always place them in a heavy-duty car seat bag
We got Chicco carry cases. Totally worth the investment for us for frequent travel. Our car seats did not get banged up and you can fill them with extra stuff that doesn’t fit in your suitcase!
We have also rented before and frankly having our car seats was much easier. We were used to quick installs and the kids were comfortable.
Agree with above that it’s safe to take them on the plane and that’s a good option too, but I know my toddlers would never stay in them.
The airlines are cracking down on extra stuff in the car seat btw. you can check the car seat for free, but if they find extra stuff in the bag they’ll charge you like a suitcase.
We carry on the plane! I would be concerned about damage that I might not see. I've seen how my bags get destroyed when checked, and given car seats have to be replaced even in a minor fender bender, that's what makes me comfortable.
I'm not sure how old /big your littles are, but we bought a Cosco Senera Next and it was super lightweight and easy (but has a low height limit, so we are looking for a replacement now)
Go for the Cosco Finale!
Absolutely take them on the plane! Once they outgrow the Cosco Senera Next move into the Cosco Finale (which is actually way easier to lug through the airport).
Thank you everyone 💓 🙏
