I’m not a huge fan of doing homework for an interview, but do you have a past/current client example you can repurpose? I think if they like you it’s less about the “right” answer and more about whether they believe you can bring a fresh, effective eye to the business.
I’d never do an assignment on an interview. I’d kindly tell them to go fuck themselves.
It’s about how you think and walking through how you got there than a single right answer.
I’ve had to do this not too long ago and faced the same dilemma: getting to the right answer working nights didn’t seem realistic... but then I did anyways. You know the drill: get to A right answer. And make it sound like THE right anwer. Plus, I was very candid about what I had done (and what I should’ve done, but didn’t because... it’s fake work).
I’ve had to do this. I think it’s both. They want to see how your mind works and whether you can uncover an insight that would inspire great work. It’s an interview assignment so I think you can take some liberties. And while I get CW1s POV, for roles that don’t have books, it’s a way for an agency to evaluate you. A while back when i was at AKQA we did this with account people too. They didn’t have to do something new but we did ask them to present a deck they had done to see if they could tell a story, how they fielded questions, etc. It was harder when the market was super competitive BUT we got much better people that way.
I wonder if this is the shop I think it is
I’m not in Strategy, but I say focus on blowing them away with a great solution. And just trust yourself that you’ll tell the story well.
That I nail the right strategic solution OR that I demonstrate that I can tell a story..... I want to push the envelope a bit and showcase my style, but i wonder if I am going to be evaluated on nailing the right answer
All great advice, @strategyhead & @strategicplanner I agree with you both. I like what you said @SP1 it’s fake work... I need to keep reminding myself of that. We shall see, I’m flying out tomorrow and going to spend the weekend banging this out for Monday. Never a fan of these assignments, but understand they are somewhat necessary
Oh and one thing I did was to end the presentation, after doing a “strategy on a page” recap, with a series of alternative “strategy on a page” I thought showed potential to show tange (and also that I was aware this could’ve gone in different directions.
