First gen college kid here. Got into T14 and got corporate law in NYC (though boutique, didn't make it into big law [yet]). One year into practicing, I have made so many blunders in how I communicate with partners (don't critique them, they're fragile and will end you) and how I network at social events (talk to those in the industry to let the partners see your eagerness, don't hang out with just your gf and law firm staff, who you're most comfortable around).
It's really not a joke. Kids with professionals around them learn things they aren't even aware of knowing.
Partners are so fragile! I find that the ones who try to be the most on your level are actually the most insecure and need you to respect them without them doing anything to earn it (besides "be there longer than you")
Really feel it. Planning to lobby for a first generation diversity group at my firm in the future. There’s just so many skills especially around networking I feel I missed out on by growing up in an environment where my parents and everyone I knew worked non-professional jobs, not to mention all the cultural norms that it’s hard to catch on to.
Lots of companies have first-generation professional affinity groups, the point is you being the group resources not isolate them ya dingus
So accurate! Props to all the first gen lawyers in this bowl. We are all the sacrificial lambs of our descendants. lol
Oh God this. Theres stuff I'm figuring out 2 years past the Bar that, in hindsight, at least half of my class knew as 1ls
Props to those of us who had to machete'd our way into making a path for ourselves.
Hahaha. YUP! Pretty much the summary of my life as the first gen lawyer in the family.
This a day.
