Do what you can but most importantly take care of your self. Resolving staffing issues is not your responsibility. Let the leadership do what they’re getting paid to do. Don’t work 24/7 to appease them.
I’ve been through something similar, and honestly, it’s tough. With a team that’s short-staffed, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Instead of just laying low, maybe try to take charge of small areas you can manage well, even if it’s just for your own sanity? I feel like I normally handle these situations better if theres at least something that feels in my control.
Aww man that really sucks. I wish you the best of luck!! Thanks for your perspective.

Whys it too late for you to jump ship? Let that boat sink
"zero problem" not "zero time"
The impending busy season is overwhelming enough without anything extra to toss on the pile. We are looking at a rough time too with not many experienced individuals around. My concern is all the fires that are going to happen and nobody seems to be prepared for how rough it will be. Just putting my head down and going through.
You can still jump, I would say we look at resumes through Jan before everyone gets too busy and just tell the story of why, nobody will fault you for being the last man standing but I can promise praying it goes by fast on a wildly understaffed team wont work
This happened to me almost a year ago! I just started working in corporate tax and 2 experienced colleague quit and one was on maternity leave. Boss held an emergency one on one with me to ensure I would receive all the support I needed. Some days I thought I was going to have a mental breakdown. For 3 months only, I learned a lot. I knew how to prioritize very well. Took on multiple projects by myself and grew confidence. Learned the value of time. Every minute matters. Anyway, I wish you good luck and hope you’ll find new hires soon.
Thanks! My boss called me and reassured that it’ll be fine and they’re looking for help. I hope I can trust their words on it but it’s already hard right now and the season hasn’t started.
I'm looking for an opportunity at CPA firm who hires International professional having 3 years OPT & can sponsor H1B
This happened to me right before I went on maternity leave. I was 7 months pregnant and the only Senior; the others quit (all hit their retention bonus year). All you can do is give it your best effort and I promise, everything has a way of getting finished one way or another. It is a group effort so all hands will be on deck.
Take this time to teach your inexperienced staff the process of keeping things moving (i.e., what to do when they get an assignment, how to prep workpapers, self review, etc.) Walk them through their first return OR let them run with it, but give them a firm internal deadline to have back to you for review. Identify their weak spots, give them comments and be sure they know to apply these comments throughout the rest of their engagements (as applicable). This will help you in the long run! Absolutely do NOT prepare anything unless you have to or you will get behind with your review work and risk blowing the budget.
Additionally, with my directors permission, I informed my clients all returns will be extended if information is not received by March 5th (business returns) or April 1st (individuals/trusts). Immediately after the deadline, I finalized all of the extended returns as much as possible and left the partners and lower level staff with the open items needed (in the event I went on leave before the project was completed).
Also take this opportunity to showcase your managerial skills and use it as leverage for a salary increase, higher bonus, or promotion at the end of the season.
Best of luck!
I do tax preparation and can handle every tax return, such as individual, both federal and state, and corporate, such as 1120, 1120S, 1065. I work for a private company as their accountant part time (30-35 hours/week). I can handle up to five tax returns a day. I would work from my home in Westminster, CO and I would do this all remotely. Are you in Colorado - primarily north Denver and cities north. I use TaxSlayer Pro to prepare all tax returns..
