Coach
Ignore, it makes them look pathetic and childish
I just ignored it and went about my day. My old firm did this when I lateraled and let me tell you, it says a lot more about them than it does about anyone else. Have a drink, kick up your feet and relax - you put in your notice.
Very unprofessional on the partner’s part but they are probably right and know way more than you do about the firm in question and how you will fit in.
Why do partners think they know everything lol
This sounds so bad. Even worse is when they trash talk about you behind your back to other associates (which, let's be honest) a lot of firms do. My old firm's office managing partner once started telling me about a senior associate who left saying he was never going to make it here blah blah. It just made him look like a petulant child in my eyes and I never took him seriously for a second
A partner who used to praise my work told someone my work product wasn’t that great lol. When it is objectively better than his, and his revisions would always make the final product worse (But I had to fake it, and pretend to agree with his revisions lol). He basically hasn’t talked to me since notice, and I’m leaving for a much better firm. So, I’m not bothered by insecure throwaway comments. In your case, he isn’t even trashing you- so why do you care?
I’m sorry this is happening. Some partners can’t understand that the grass is greener on the other side for some people. I just moved in house and this happened to me with one partner, which is wild because I could be a client. It’s left a sour taste in my mouth, and I’m not sure I would theoretically use them going forward. Maybe I’m sensitive, but it didn’t need to be like this because of their lack of emotional intelligence.
Funny you say that because I viewed the partner I’m talking about the same way. I was very disappointed how he took the news. Ruined my entire relationship with him, but I’m over it. I chalk it up to not knowing this partner as a real person as much as I thought I did. At the end of the day, I was just an asset to bring him money and that’s all he cared about. So duly noted and he probably won’t be getting mine then
