I think this is totally up to you. I have received thank you notes for gifts I sent before the wedding. Me, I waited and wrote them all after the wedding and for those people who came to the wedding included a comment also thanking them for coming. Even people who didn't give us a gift got a thank you for coming. That was important to me, but I didn’t want to be writing two notes.
If you receive gifts prior to the wedding either send the thank you within two weeks of receiving the gift or within 2 months of the wedding. Sending them as they arrive spreads out the task. Just have a system to track everything you got, who from, and when you send the thank you.
Sending them as they arrive lets people know you got them, but most people look for them post wedding.
I’ve been sending thank you notes as we physically receive gifts to simplify for myself what’s been sent! We plan to send everyone who attends the wedding a thank you, regardless of if they give another gift or not, so we’ve just known there will be multiple sent to some people. Never a bad thing to be known for sending too many thank yous, IMO!
