Weird scenario. Graduated in 2022 missed my state bar score by 1 point. So I transferred my score to a neighboring state. Got licensed. Also got licensed in the Federal district for my state so I could do federal work. Took a job in my home state where I’m not fully licensed due to my wife and son being happy here. Currently working as a para-lawyer at a small shop. Making 58k a year. Working on our fed cases as a lawyer. Also being a paralegal, doing all intakes, filings, runs, anyone relate?

I am a specialist in a paralegal department who makes close to double your salary. You should probably do anything else. That sounds like an awful working environment, too.

My bonus is $57k. I’m also 32. This is crazy.

Yes that’s insane! As a Senior Paralegal I’m making $82k. But the counsel with the $57k bonus, that’s awesomeness!

Could you go in-house? Getting licensed as a corporate counsel in some states just requires admission to any state.

Want to leave because MP and staff are very difficult to work with, and love to threaten me with termination. I’m 32. I really don’t want to deal with this mess. I feel like I get pulled in multiple directions. My head para is horrible to me.

like

I had to do doc review. The direction provided, work and pay were horrible. Each job paid less. What companies pay well?

To be blunt, I can't see how this is helping you develop your career in any capacity. And I get your family likes the other state more but then the plan should have been to get a job in the state you're barred in, retake the bar, and get admitted in your current state -- not agree to do para work at a salary that rivals government salary pay. The fact that you took this kind of arrangement at all is going to have other firms questioning why you did so/if it was out or desperation. I think they might already wonder that after 3 years but will absolutely wonder if you're still there after 5 years under the same arrangement

like

Even government attorneys make more than that. Generally, much more. And I’ve heard rumors that it’s much easier to get in at the Justice Dept. these days.

Name and shame OP. Which firm is this???

That’s a legal assistant salary. I’m currently a legal operations specialist making $90,000

I graduated in 2023 from an unranked law school in MA. I missed the bar by a few points so I transferred my UBE score to MO and was finally barred in Dec 2024, just days before my toxic in house temp job laid me off unexpectedly. Shortly after, I decided to pivot into legal tech after realizing I do better in startup environments vs big corporate environments. After 125 interviews I finally got a decent offer this week for a director of legal engineering role at legal AI startup paying well over 6 figures, fully remote. So many hiring managers tried to dim my confidence throughout my job search, but I never bought into it. Feels good to have finally proved them all wrong. Persistence can pay off if you don’t quit.

Sounds like charity work. Nice! Lol

I have friends that have back office positions but never received an offer letter & their company still doesn’t use them now. Has anyone given notice & started a new position without an offer letter? Do international companies provide something else in lieu of a formal offer letter? I know offer letters aren’t legally binding anyhow, but seems they’d provide something. (International = Canada)

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? Any advice?

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
