Say this to your cd
This is a mature question and you should be commended for asking it. Some clients are great at evaluating work and providing feedback and some clients just suck at it. The same can be true about Creative Directors. One of the best ways to get better as a creative person is to understand where feedback is coming from. Is it a process, or is it just coming from someone’s gut? Is it based on a position of fear? Is an approver going to get dinged in their career if they approve something that’s too risky or not on brand or not on strategy? Are they reacting from a budget standpoint? Or are they just giving you feedback based on what they like versus what the target audience will react to? Sometimes the most important creative decisions are based on anticipating the way clients or CDs provide feedback without allowing it to impact the work itself. It’s a tight rope. And it doesn’t always work. This business is a little bit too much trial and error. But unlocking goals and motivations can help.
I’ve learned to make things very clear in the creative brief. Also helps to review the brief prior to presenting to the client and present research. Would love to go more into detail but that is what I would suggest. Sometimes people are just straight up rude though.
