From what I've personally seen, the FBI investigates various types of white-collar crimes such as embezzlement, fraud, money laundering, and public corruption.
A friend of mine from the FBI investigates cybercrimes like hacking, computer and network intrusions, identity theft, internet fraud, and other online criminal activities.
I've met a few FBI agents that work on financial crimes. They carry firearms like the rest, but the majority of their job is done on the computer, examining bank statements, tracing where cheques are flowing, and so on.
The FBI investigates organized crime groups such as drug trafficking organizations, mafia groups, and gangs.
The FBI investigates major thefts such as art thefts, jewelry thefts, and thefts of other valuable items, as well as violent crimes such as kidnappings and serial murders.
