Corrections officers can provide a sense of stability and routine in an otherwise chaotic life. They can also provide support and guidance to help prisoners get back on their feet.
Correctional officers can ensure that prisoners have access to necessary resources, such as food, water, and medical care. They can also provide a safe and secure environment for prisoners, and ensure that they are treated fairly.
Correctional officers can do nothing to make sure that the prisoners life isn't harder than it already is. The prisoners are already in a difficult and stressful situation, and any additional stress or difficulty imposed by correctional officers would only make things worse.
Just uphold the law and don't mistreat (or allow others to mistreat) the prisoners, that's all that can be expected of you. Remember the role you play in the system and do what you're hired to do.
You can't make prison life easy, it just isn't possible. I'm kind of in a different position because I work with juvenile offenders, but I sometimes have to re-incarcerate them which weighs heavily on my mind. All I can do is hope that the rehabilitation programs offered by the system are helping offenders to make progress.
Take prisoners' complaints seriously, that's very important. Also, make sure not to exhibit any favoritism whatsoever... no matter what. Treat everyone the same. They are locked up because they couldn't go the straight and narrow in their civilian lives. So don't "like" or "dislike" one prisoner more than any other.
