Depends on which companies/industries, but they generally need commercial counsels, product counsels, privacy, reg, labor and employment, and corporate.
Probably a mix of corporate, regulatory, and transactional work, ideally in an industry that commands a higher salary in house.
I was a HC/LS corporate/regulatory/transactional attorney and was able to go in house in pharma, first in a compliance role and now as product counsel. I also am the Privacy Officer for the U.S. and Canada at my company.
My HC/LS experience was key and pharma pays better than many other industries. But Product Counsel roles are typically better paid, better career progression, and more “prestigious” than other types of in house roles. Straight Commercial Counsel roles are typically not as great for pay, WLB, or career progression.
I find that hard to believe, but most of what I’ve read and observed is that product counsel roles tend to be the most effective route to get to GC. Would be interesting in reading that ACC piece.
