If all you’re being told is that you are on track, you’re probably not really on track yet. You need to have an open discuss with the partners that would be sponsoring you on what a realistic timeline is and what you still need to do to get there.

Re associate to NEP, 3 years out i was having informal conversations with partners in my group that i was on track, what to focus on, how to enhance chances etc, but in a very no promises way.
2 years out that intensified with a lot of active discussion of "when you're up" and a decreased emphasis on the uncertainty
1 year out, the year i was up, the how to get there conversation basically stopped and those conversations became about my first year as a partner, sticking the transition, etc, people in positions of meaningful authority were saying things like "im sure you're not worrying, you arent a close call"
NEP to EP basically the same pattern
It’s pretty explicit; I have been told I am being put up this coming year.
I was told by my mentor last fall that she was laying the groundwork for my promotion internally and we worked on action steps I needed to take over the following year (I even have a couple on my to do list for this week). I’ve been included in pitches for the past few years, and as a 7th year I’m taking point on most of my cases. At my firm (or at least in my group) you can also tell who’s on track in the next year or so by looking at how origination credit is divvied up for new matters. Basically, if a senior associate is getting origination credit, then they’re being positioned for partner.
That’s interesting….so there are seniors who have a hand in bringing in work etc but are not getting origination credit and are not being considered for promotion?
People lie too though. I was told I was being put up twice, and then it just didn't happen
You should have left immediately.

Although I guess besides words they would also give you a raise beyond sa comp when you wait. I was given a raise to $700,000 in year 9 (lateraled with my group to become counsel), raised to $750k now. So much easier to believe
This is very firm, group and sponsor dependent. Even within my firm, there is significant variation for what and how much is communicated for both NEP and EP promotion.
