How viable/easy is it to move from patent prosecution? I’m assuming patent lit is an obvious option, but what about tech trans? Other general practice areas? Bird law?

Also curious about what tech trans is like

like

I worked with a couple partners that did patent prosecution and tech trans. It was a pretty natural transition for them because they were working on the agreements for the same clients so they understood the underlying IP issues really well. I think some of this will depend on how your firm is set up—it works especially well when the IP licensing and tech trans attorneys sit with the other IP groups, but that’s certainly not a requirement. Getting into some IP licensing is probably a good segue into other transactional work.

I’m a designer in the planning/landscape architecture dept. of a CE firm. Extremely frustrated that after 4+ years and multiple asks, I’m not getting the in-field construction experience I’ve asked for. I know that my designs could be better if I could see how things are actually built but I get slapped in the face with “I need you in the office designing/drafting” or “there’s no budget to have you go out” and then sends an intern to inspect instead. I’m 5 yrs out of college. Any advice?

Has anyone found roles in Big 4 or industry that allowed more work life balance when their kids were young without damaging future career trajectory? I'm a partner with young kids and feel like I'm missing out on too much of their lives. Wishful, but my dream job would have a lighter workload in terms of time and pressure for the next ~5 years, but not set me back too much (or at all) when the kids are older and tired of me in a few years and I'm ready to be back at work full force.

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬
