Yeah I think that almost all company blogs or press releases have been SEO tools for a while. How many people do you know that read company press releases? Unless there's some major scandal (or I'm doing research for something work related), these docs aren't really intended to be read by consumers. Still I think it's important to have an overall strategy to have your bases covered.
Yeah, with all of the influx of information and news we receive everyday, who has the time to follow a company's press releases? I don't even pay attention to my favorite companies' online content unless it's a new product I want to buy

I think they are still a necessary evil, but a pretty outdated tool for actually communicating meaningful information. We still send them to journalists and the newswires because we have to, but the actual press release is don't really bring as much coverage as they used to.

They're a necessary evil. Everyone puts them out, but they provide very little real world value. The biggest benefit they have for clients is SEO, and even that doesn't make as big of a difference now as it did 15 years ago. You need more than a handful of press releases to start showing up in the SERPs.
