I had a whole new book picked out this week but my students begged for another week on Ruby Bridges! I teach 5th and was surprised at how well is resonated with them this year. I think being exposed to arguments about school policy/books/etc has made them more curious about student led protests and they ate her story up. Minds were blown when I told them she was still alive!
Yes!!! We did a unit of Ruby Bridges with my fifth graders as well and they couldn’t even fathom the idea that she’s still alive. I found a kids podcast with an interview she did that we listened to.
The kids this year are also really interested in Kid Nuz podcast. These are listening exercises I give them and they seem to really enjoy podcasts.
I teach a lot of books and stories and poems by Black, Asian, and Brown people all year. During Feb., I give a mini lesson every day about famous Black men and women or other little-known Black history. We usually cover two per day. Today the kids learned about Charles Drew and Billie Holiday. (We watched her sing “Strange Fruit.”) Tomorrow it’s on to Cathay Williams and Buffalo soldiers (and Bob Marley’s video and song about them.) Then in the following days it’s Lonnie Johnson, Stagecoach Mary, chain gangs, Tuskegee airmen, Ma Rainey, etc.
I do the same. There are human history months. We don’t look for race as a determining factor in our books. We read all year from diverse populations.
I always cover The Watson’s Go To Birmingham 1969. I cover the book as well as the movie. My classes over the years have always enjoyed it, so to me it never gets old.
