For a shorter assignment you could have students work in pairs. One student describes the setting and the other draws it, then have them switch roles, then have them discuss how their discriptions may have resulted in different features in each picture.
Instead of travel brochures, why not have them made an ad about the setting? They would still have to do some research & it could be a print ad (PowerPoint) for a magazine or website, a radio ad (recording), or more of a commercial (video, even with just them talking with pictures interspersed). Let them have fun with it & learn too. 🙂
Students can use shoeboxes for setting. Or do a slide presentation, depending on the grade.
Use their interests to your advantage: if a lot of them play roblox, they can build a place on their map that shows the setting of their story. (Same with mincraft). A lot of kids are technologically savvy and know a lot of video editor programs or apps where they can create and show.
There’s a great Loony Toons episode with Daffy Duck that changes the setting on him. Each time the setting changes, his character and plot has to change. Maybe have kids watch it and then do an exercise where you give students a basic story premise and then give different groups a different setting.
I have them make setting boxes using shoe boxes . Very popular and enjoyable activity . Each side of the box represents an aspect of the setting . For example , physical location , time frame , cultural aspects from that time frame , etc . Students research and print pictures to decorate the box sides . Inside we put an essay describing why setting is important. Taken from the NYS Regents . The prompt : Some stories make sense based on their geographical location or time frame but when transplanted to another dimension , would be nonsensical “
Well, brochures are barely a thing anymore anyway even if they weren’t overdone. What about a webpage about the place and bring in photos from Google that they associate with the setting? A TripAdvisor situation where it describes the place, what you can do there, etc. Google Sites is free and it’s very easy to use. Plus, they may want to start a website for their own business one day. 😁
AH- I just saw you’re elementary. I’m new here. I think you could still do it, it just might turn into a much bigger, longer project with elementary kids depending on their existing skills with technology. It’s so important in today’s world though… I think it’s worth taking time on.
