What companies are paying 250k+?? I'm 5 years into big law but all of the commercial counsel positions I'm seeing are for like 200-220k. It would be great to get an idea of what companies I should keep on my radar.

Is the 200-220k number salary or TC?

Either way, it seems roughly right if not a little high for total market (all geographies, all types of businesses) at 5 YOE.

Without knowing your focus area, I can say try to look at companies generally known for pay top of market irrespective of role/department; if they pay everyone well, they’ll likely pay their legal dept well. Then narrow that list by companies that have a need for your practice and industry focus, filter by desired geography … you get the idea.

The 200-220 salary range you see is only base salary. Total compensation could be significantly more than that especially for tech companies.

The low 200s base for commercial counsel is market for hcol areas from what I’ve seen. Expect less for other COLs. Tech companies can help with stock comp on top of that, with some bonus.

like

you are only 5YOE total and 0YOE in house, dont look for salary but look for a solid in house role that will get your foot in the door

like

Yeah 5 YOE is not much and would get you the "junior" in house roles which 220k base would be pretty good. Senior roles (YOE 8-10+) are the ones with bases of 250-300k.

like

200-220 sounds right for 5 YOE in this market. A few tech and pharma companies might pay more, but usually (not always) they will be looking for more YOE.

Outside counsel has been prepping company witnesses for a trial in August. It is my subject area so I am supervising outside counsel. I did not, however, choose the counsel. He is doing a really awful job. Co counsel is better, but not great either. Higher ups love the firm… I do not want to micromanage, but I have genuine concerns about outside counsel’s ability to try this case. Trials are rare, and I just don’t think these guys have actually tried many cases. Cont. below…

Have interviews set up at FAANG co and getting good signals, for a position that was posted widely (all across US) but not remote. Haven’t broached the subject of location yet. Would you (1) early on clearly state that you’re not open to relocation but that you would be open to visiting a big office once or twice a month; (2) not say anything now and wait to get an offer and ask for an exemption; or (3) something else?

How did current in-house attorneys find their positions? I am currently in big law with 3 years of experience. Seems that most recruiters can only help me lateral to other big law firms.

Crying for my RSUs….started at my company about 6 months ago and got some RSUs split over 3 years. Turns out the stock price at time of my hiring (which is what was used to calculate the number of shares over the three years) was the highest it’s ever been. Stock price has been cut in half since then, along with my RSU value. 😭 how do I cope?

I started a new role 3 months ago and I don’t feel like I’m being set up to succeed. There was basically no onboarding. I have no clue who to go to for anything. We have no central repository for old documents, so I’m constantly fumbling around & starting from zero. I keep finding systems or programs that someone was supposed to get me access to/train me on but never did. I’m so stressed out because I never know if I’m missing something huge. Is this normal..or do I need to start job hunting?
