Hmmmm. Well I went to school in Texas. And we learned that Canada, the US ( except for Hawaii) and Mexico were the largest countries in North America, but that central america was part of The North American Continent ( the divide being the isthmus at Panama) and the Caribbean Islands are part of North America.
And while we may not have gotten the entire story we were told no falsehoods about Columbus.
The great lakes were connected to the mississippi river through a canal and Chicago was the start of much trade that flowed down the Mississipi. Maybe you are muddling what they told you about trade and you just assumed it was the start of the river?
The things I found out that later weren't true had more to do with scientific discoveries. Like there was more than 3 phases of matter.
Not saying you didn't have crappy teachers but there is the possibility you weren't paying close attention or don't clearly remember the lessons. Or maybe you are much younger and education declined that much between the two of us.

Very sad, OP. Will be interesting if others had your experience. I grew up in Texas City, so different school district and graduated a long time ago.
Was definitely taught a false narrative that made Columbus out to be a bad guru rather than heroic.
Also taught falsehoods about the Industrial Revolution. Glorious achievement that saw humanity progress by leaps and bounds. Yet they wanted to paint it in a bad light.

Lol. You can't both be old enough for the title and young enough to be taught either of those consructs,
