I like the concept. Since Google themselves are considering completion of the course as on-par with xx traditional education, it should be a good course. If the resume of a junior came across my desk and they completed the course, I would consider it a positive.
I'll probably take it myself even.
As a hiring manager, it means nothing. I’m all for professional development and continuous learning—which Coursera is great. But it isn’t a true industry certification or attestation of your skills.
In fairness I also think anyone with a basic CSM isn’t proving anything. Anyone can sit in a class or Zoom for two days. I almost only consider PMs with CSM-SP or PMP. Both validate your EXPERIENCE + skills.
Certifications don't mean much at all to me from a creative industry standpoint. Experience and people management skill is so much more important.
It’s a free certificate provided by a trusted source. As someone who lent their knowledge and expertise to the team developing this, it’s extremely valid and valuable.
On top of being FREE which is light years ahead of the gate keeping created by someone requiring folks have a $550 PMP cert to even be considered for a job. Which again is just like.....unreal to me.
This is a wonderful and easily accessible way for younger, less experienced and less financially well off folks to solidify and validate their project management skills and if you (general, not “you” as in OP) aren’t taking it seriously you need to seriously take a moment and think through the kind of environment you’re creating in our function within the industry. I hope to god I don’t work with anyone like that and never do.
Definitely not on you, it’s not in the upfront anywhere! Only found it by digging into the course. And you are right that Google isn’t taking any profit, which is commendable- it’s just the partner course platform. And it is still way cheaper than PMP, as you say
Replying w cost info in the main thread because I agree w SPM1 that cost is an important component of this discussion. Let me know if this changes anyone’s thoughts:
In the U.S. and Canada, Coursera charges $39/month after the initial 7 day free trial period. The certificate can be completed in less than 6 months of part time study, meaning most learners complete for under $300 USD. In other countries where the IT Support Certificate is available, your cost may be lower. Google does not generate any revenue from Google Career Certificates and has made need-based financial assistance available.
Thank you so much for clarifying this I didn’t come across this for some reason (though it seems the site google has set up seems to not display costs super clearly) and I def was incorrect in saying it’s free!
