There is no better than the other. It’s different problems with different solutions. I personally enjoy people leadership because I’ve been senior enough to grow and help others grow and mature. One is high focus in a deep narrow item. The other becomes more of a focus on many items that take up your time. Rewarding none the less.

I’ve been on both sides of this coin. On the manager side I didn’t like signing time sheets, vacation requests, performance reviews, but I fought like hell to get them promoted and raises. I also enjoyed the career coaching aspects and working as a tech lead on multiple projects. Overall it’s more hours. I’m an individual contributor at the moment and it’s so easy after being a senior manager for a few years. Less than 40hrs, no stress, minimal responsibility, I feel like I’m partially retired. But I’m running out of growth for my career. I can be principal architect and that’s it. The other tracks are director or VP. Overall I’m just not sure an extra 15-20 hrs a week is worth it for a little more money which will not increase the quality of my life.
I like individual contributer but also like training and mentoring staff. I don't like management role because I hate project management and having to create rolled up tps reports for upper management.
I like individual roles where I can focus mainly on my work. However, I do like management roles and helping others develop more professionally. But, I'm also very impatient and I hate working with people who are slow learners and don't comprehend information well
Ah. That totally makes sense then. Does suck but then you prioritize your time elsewhere.
