Myths aren’t holding women back. Patriarchy is
I agree with the person above that calling it a myth is not very accurate. They aren't myths, they are lies and prejudice that some groups refuse to stop perpetuating. I think the thing holding women back in the workplace are the people who want to keep us held back.
That we are promoted bc we are a woman and to meet a quota. Not that we are qualified.
YES, I have actually heard men talking about someone who was only promoted so that there would be a woman in the position, and I found it so offensive that it was hard to even find words to address them - but you better believe I found them! Standing up to these lies is so important because that's the only way that we can strip them of their power, little by little.
I can kind of see how the negotiation one comes into play. Just speaking from my experience when I was promoted to higher positions, a lot of those around made it seem like I should be grateful to even be here in the first place let alone want more from it. Wish I could go back and negotiate even more than I did, but at least I know now that I deserve to.
THIS. I cannot say this enough. I honestly thought I wasn't even allowed to negotiate. And I would hear people (men) say they negotiated but never heard women saying they did so I just thought like you said that we should be grateful and take what they were offering.
Myths?
That we are all emotional. I am rarely emotional unless you piss me off. Takes a lot, only happened once at work.
Everyone is emotional. It’s just that emotions which men tend to express, such as anger or lust, are considered logic because we live in a patriarchy
