Depends on company and what level. PE vs public. I’ll speak to portco for acquisitive company with typical tx value $10M to $20M.
VP level is mostly sourcing, relationships with owners, travel to targets, and working with private equity group. Negotiating key deal points and leading M&A on all fronts.
Associate - manager level - majority of time spent financial modeling and investor presentations. Reviewing potential targets (I.e pre-LOI diligence and modeling) and on live deal, running point for diligence streams and again all financial modeling. Some travel and various admin and reporting.
How did you land the role if you don’t mine? What is your background?
Sr. Director of corporate development at $4billion top line PortCo: I’m doing SC Ops work integrating 6 businesses - we are opening a new facility & closing 6. Day to day is PMO work and presenting progress to Steerco. This time a year ago we were purchasing and evaluating targets.
I’m a manager essentially, but I do mostly modeling, looking at targets and doing diligence with our PE sponsor team, strategy initiatives and looking out where we need to position ourselves etc, and internal initiatives with the finance team to make everyone’s life easier
Internal politics. Educating people who doesnt have the slightest clue about M&A , but insist of running the deal them selves. I still objectivity as there are way, WAY too much feelings in the search & selection process. Implement to actually conduct DD before signing. Deal with SME groups that bring their tool and mindset to a deal (e.g a DD is similar to our analysis report which takes 6 months to complete). And it is slow. I often get urgent requests that are to be discussed 2 weeks from when the request was made. You get to go home at 4-5 PM most days
