Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

Interestingly I haven't really experienced this yet. Has this been common for you? It feels really invasive and like they're obviously trying to get in your way of negotiating a salary jump. I think if I felt forced to answer I would fib about my salary, how are they going to know?
No company should ask this type of information. I think it’s illegal in some states
I remember seeing this back in the day, but definitely not anytime recently. I don't think they are able to call and confirm your previous pay either, so I'd either leave it blank, or write a number that's more than I was making.
I had it come up on a job application recently.
I thought it was against the law now to ask that. I know however when they call your past employers that is the one thing they can ask and dates of employment! Leave it blank or if it requires something put 0.00.
Thank you everyone for the feedback. I have seen this on applications for the last 2-3 years. I will definitely try out some of your suggestions.
Many states have made this unlawful...
I think it is illegal in MA
I would leave “salary at PRIOR employers” for each employer blank as legally companies are not allowed to ask and it propagates continuing a “lower than market/value” from old to new employer…..if a required field put $1 to proceed with the app process. If your resume is compelling and aligned to role, odds are you will get called by Recruiting to clarify and use that opportunity to discuss “range for the position” if not already in the job posting (see below).
I have mostly seen applications that ask “your desired salary” as the first question to proceed. If there is a posted salary range for the position, use your judgement on what to put but also make it what you would accept. If the range is not interesting, SKIP applying as you will ultimately just waste your time. If you proceed in the interviewing process, you can adjust this number UPWARDS for following reasons: (1) I only indicated “my BASE salary requirements, NOT including bonus or other incentives” (2) based on our interview discussions and understanding better the TARGET METRICS, I feel my base salary should be closer to $xxxxx and thought target bonus was YY% vs the LOWER bonus you indicated during interviews and my Total Comp should be closer to $yyyyyy so let’s figure out how to get there. This is all salary negotiation in verbal dialogue.
Good luck!!
