Honestly anytime I do anything in excel it takes me way longer than it should. Generally speaking that is because someone has messed with my spreadsheet and I have to go in and fix everything and change it back to the way I had it.

like

Ugh, it's the worst when you have a great, functioning spreadsheet then some jerk comes along who doesn't know what they're doing and now you're spending an hour correcting their mistakes. And there's never any additional compensation, it's just part of the job. Part of the job is fixing stupid mistakes

Opening excel to calculate a simple math problem...

...All of that just because I refuse to use the calculator app because the 8 and 9 boxes are misaligned

Every table is structured and named.

And then I get to watch as people write over formulas anyway to make the table look how they want and it's full of red corner indicators.

It’s absurd how few ppl actually know how tables work

Running macros to reconcile accounts.. it is definitely a time saver in the long run, but setting them up can be difficult if your code isn’t perfect

like

Right, macros are useful but can become a double edge sword if not coded properly.
Think: hard code / hard references in a spreadsheet, no commenting / user guide, no error management, etc …
For this reason it’s generally better to do as few macros as possible. Your future self will thank you

Color coding to sort data “quickly” 😕

I'm a Canadian on the TN visa working in the US and planning on maxing my Roth IRA (6k) and will have enough left to max my 401k this year, but am not sure if I should just use a taxable account over 401k due to tax considerations when I move back to Canada (likely 1-2 years from now). Any thoughts here? I don't think I'll have enough RRSP room to move 401k>IRA>RRSP and I would prefer to not have to file US taxes every year in retirement for withdrawls if I left the 401k in the US.

I’ve been with my current company for a little over 5 years now and since the start of the pandemic have been WFH. I absolutely love WFH and have always wanted a position in which I could WFH. There is talk of bringing everyone back to the office full time and that’s not what I would like to happen. I’ve been searching for a new position in which it would be a remote role. My current company also said I am maxed out in term of what they are willing to pay salary wise.
