What is the most unhinged fact about advertising that if you didn’t work in the field you wouldn’t know?

For example, a friend of mine in the medical field recently shared that if you get a kidney transplant, they don’t take any other kidneys out. So you could end up with 3-4 kidneys inside of you.

It got me thinking if there’s anything remotely interesting or juicy in this field to someone that doesn’t work in it 😂 struggling to find one

Clients can spend millions of dollars on a project that gets cancelled because of a company scandal or a personal scandal of a company exec that goes public.

I had a multi million dollar campaign killed because some exec saw a cut and said regarding the woman in it ‘I don’t like her face’ 😞

Okay that kidney transplant fact is still blowing my mind

Anyone else interested in why they leave the old kidneys inside?

Everything in an ad is a deliberate choice that was discussed multiple times.

I once created a commercial about an animated chicken and we discussed with clients how it should sound like. We spent a good 30 mins clucking different intonations and inflections.

I’m close with someone who’s an internal medicine doc(non specialist) and she makes like $400k a year before taxes

When I was as at a big nyc agency, strategy would take 4-6 weeks to develop a solid brief, creatives spend 2 weeks on an initial concept, we’d present, then revise, present again to client for 3 more rounds, get approval, have 1 week to align with production and bid out, another week to review treatments, another week to develop the pre-pro book, then fly off and shoot multiple days, then go into a 4 week edit. In house - we get a non-brief, and 8 weeks to do all of this (with a crap budget). Can I have an extra kidney?

Majority of the stats our industry bases insights on are from narrow, small studies.
And if we’re not paying for the most recent stats, the things we google are sometimes 1-3yrs old.

Surgical advantages

Reduced risk and trauma: Removing the original kidneys is a major, invasive surgery that requires accessing a tightly protected area high up in the abdomen, near the spine. This adds surgical time and significantly increases the risks of complications like bleeding and infection.

Faster, less painful recovery: By leaving the old kidneys in, the transplant operation is less complex, leading to a shorter surgery and a quicker recovery for the patient.

New kidney is placed elsewhere: The transplanted kidney is not placed in the same location as the original ones. Instead, it is surgically connected in the lower abdomen or pelvis, where it is easier to attach to major blood vessels and the bladder. The original kidneys do not take up the space needed for the new organ.

Medical reasons

Often not harmful: In most cases, failed kidneys do not pose a threat to the patient's health and simply shrink over time. There is no medical need to remove them.

Can offer residual function: Even if a kidney is mostly failing, it might still have a small amount of function left. This residual function can contribute to overall fluid balance and may be helpful during and immediately after the transplant procedure.
Preserves options if the new kidney fails: In some rare cases, a patient's native kidneys have recovered some function after a transplanted kidney fails and takes the filtering load off them.

From my experience, Radio has been pretty straightforward.. but TV advertising is a pain... usually the inventory is not managed well and tons of advertising spots get bumped each day... then you have to try and reschedule them within the parameters at which they were bought. There's also a lot of MATH involved with rating points and value points of each ad, etc. etc... Radio used to be crazy - people used to party a lot!

like

Oh! and in order to get "RATINGS" of shows and radio stations... the sample size typically only has to be at least 10 people who are surveyed. That's it. How do you base REAL results of viewership and listenership on such a SMALL survey!? ridiculous

Sometimes you get wild personalities like this disgruntled employee, who had the password to the client’s (Burger King) social media and took matters into his own hands, lol.

The amount of time and money that gets wasted for ridiculous reasons.

One team I was on billed ~$1.5M on concepting for over a year because the client circulated everything for other people's input and couldn't make a decision.

Another time, the plug got pulled on three major initiatives that had taken all year to develop because ONE client thought he knew better than our thoroughly researched customer segmentation models. He based this on knowing of a single KOL who didn't seem to fit squarely, and with that decision he threw away about $4M worth of work.

I worked on one pharma brand where their medical/legal/regulatory review portal was so abysmal that we had to add tens thousands of dollars to our scope just to account for our time wasted on that platform's inefficiency. At EOY we still had to write off some of the costs because it had slowed us down even more than expected.

Oh and also fonts are crazy expensive.

I have not been on a project for over 3 months. Since I joined, I have been put in training. The training got extended by a month and now it's close to 4 months since I joined and without a project.

What should I do? People say that I'm lucky to get paid without doing any work, but it is stressing me out. I need the experience. The uncertainty is freaking me out, with rumours of layoffs and the certification program and all.

How do I get into a project? How long do I have to wait more?
