What is with some partner’s cutting attorneys billing for no valid reason? I feel like this is an issue with older partners. It’s like they don’t understand when they cut they also make the firm less money.

Often it’s a perception that the attorney took too long to complete the task and they realize the client will say “how much are they charging me for this?”

like

This is exactly why I cut time

Sometimes it’s more important to keep the client happy and take a small hair cut on a case than lose the client over a couple thousand dollars.

like

What is a valid reason? You may not think it is valid but something simple as client relationship management is a reason.

Partner budgeted X, bill was more than X, partner cut

like

What reason have they told you and what do you consider to be a valid reason?

like

It is important to keep clients. You will understand once you bring your own business. In a long run this is making money not loosing.

like

No, when people cut hours it is because they know the client will or should not pay.

like

I'm in-house and I cut something on over half of bills I review. You have no idea the reasoning behind the cut.

like

I recently had a young attorney right time in the amount of $9500 for something I knew if I had done it myself would not cost more than $5000. I had to cut that or explained to the client why it cost so much.

Not sure the way in which work
is described now (been retired five years) but the more active voice and description I used, the less billing concerns were raised by clients or the billing attorney.
Explanations like analyze defense strategies to improve jurors understanding of case, negotiate improved discovery requirements, assess witness deposition inconsistencies, etc.

like

Agree, and you want to avoid that the reader has to think about what you did.

When I review billing guides I find everything from „Emails“ for .7 to proper descriptions „Reviewing side letter for investor A; providing instructions to x“. I generally send the former back to the offending party.
