If they are clinical stage, and you’re hoping to ride them to an IPO or buyout, then they don’t need strategy — they need operational excellence
Agreed...that’s a costly place to be. Help them be efficient and it will pay off.
Thinking in reverse - the roles you’re best suited for are central S&O/program/product manager and outlicensing BD&L/alliance management. Consultant skillsets are usually too general to slot into the other roles that are important in clinical stage firms: Reg, Clin Dev/Ops, PV, CMC, PKPD, legal/IP and translational biology.
In some firms you may find that finance, investor relations and corp dev/strat have some presence, esp in more mature firms, but this isn’t as common. Often the BD, S&O and scientific/clinical folks will double hat. Still, if that interests you, those options are out there.
With in mind, figure out what kind of skills and projects you need to build in your repertoire for S&O/BD&L positions. These are still very important roles that demand a good understanding of both science and business application
