Yeah, $600 wouldn’t last long in my shop. my budget is more like $7000. A larger voc tech up north has 80 students in biotech, and a $50k annual budget.
$600, I still end up ordering stuff myself. Today I had my students look at projects that might interest them. I will probably end up buying a lot of the supplies.
Part of the problem is that the school procurement process is so slow. It really is faster to order stuff from AliExpress.
With my school budget, this year I am going to focus on some solder stations. I ordered two Weller stations and they worked out well.
Another $600. I try to stretch it.
As an example, I will be doing the first lessons from the "30 Days Lost in Space" programme. However, I placed the order for the parts with AliExpress. That way I give each student a complete kit for about $15 each. However, to order from AliExpress, I have to place the order myself. Then I get reimbursed for all but the taxes, I have to eat that part.
A lot of the small stuff in my class comes from my own pocket. As an example, before placing the large order of the Arduino and parts I placed a test order for five sets, just to make sure of what I was getting. I ate that complete order.
I spend my own $ for my classroom, mainly for consumables like kleenex, detergent, and strawberries. Takes too long to wait for school PO, and getting reimbursed is a hassle.
