What is your ideal work hours and in person vs remote flavor? I’m on pacific time working slightly offset central hours (8 to 4) remote and while I’m not a morning person I’m finding how nice it is to have time after work to exercise and cook a nourishing meal. Once a quarter we’ll come together and that feels like the right balance for me.

Serious question from a happy software engineer, what do you all love about your work/actually enjoy doing during working hours?

I'll start; I'm privileged enough to have been given the opportunity to work and learn deeply on Linux and Kubernetes, and I get to tinker and play with them all day. Problem solving with them is a "fun" part of my job.

Of course most things aren't roses and sunshine, but I'd love to hear the positive parts of what you are doing, or what you like to do at work.

Is it common to negotiate software engineer salary at smaller companies? I know it’s common at FAANG, but what about for companies with around 200 engineers? I have a counter offer from my current company and on-site interviews scheduled for end of July with google and Amazon, but I’d prefer to go with the smaller local company if I can negotiate the salary (from offer letter) up another 5% or so.

I'm a SWE from Italy. Love my country but salary and taxes here are outrageous. Got 2yrs experience in fullstack and data science, 2masters, a peer reviewed paper and outperform all my peers for 24k€ a year.
I'm thinkin about landing a remote SWE job (leetcoding and building a portfolio this summer).
