Check out staff attorney positions for the courts. Appellate and trial level
Many federal judges have permanent clerks and term clerks. You should see if any permanent clerk positions are open
Federal career clerks are a thing but you’d likely need to build up a bit more experience before getting a job like that. Try to get a term federal clerkship next and go from there.
When I worked on the Hill, we had a number of former clerks around and they seemed to like policy work as well.
There are ADR firms that hire staff attorneys to assist the arbitrators, who are often retired judges. I bet it’s pretty similar but obviously if you like the mix of the civil and criminal work, that won’t be replicated in this environment
Get a federal clerkship next! Also there are permanent court attorneys in many state courts and permanent law clerks in federal courts.
Some states have permanent clerkships. They do in PA. Could be worth checking out if you’re willing to move.

If you work for a small Prosecutor's Office or as a city attorney you'll have to wear many hats. The criminal cases may be misdemeanor issues handled in mayor's court (primarily speeding) but you'll be in a position to handle a wide variety of matters.
I am a staff attorney for my city’s board of appeals and I love it so very much. I pretty much only conduct legal research and write, plus I get all the government benefits like set hours and actual holiday/sick/vacation days.
