Being as good a listener as you are a talker. Communicating clearly is key to management, but real communication requires listening to what others say -- and sensing what they are not saying. Of course, to be a good manager you need to have firsthand experience in the tasks you are directing others to perform, and demonstrate that ability periodically to not only lead by example but to keep the troops in line by showing them you know what you're talking about.

Very good notes! I think you have to be a good listener in order to hear your subordinates.
For me a great manager is someone who actually loves what they do. When someone is just there for the money, it comes across in the way that they lead their teams. A good manager cares about the effectiveness and longevity of the team and not just how it makes them look good.

This is a good one. You must love what you do and it should make your job that much easier!
My manager is wonderful. He has an easy-going personality and he's easy to talk to. He is very supportive of his staff and wants us to grow professionally. Our team is pretty solid, and I credit that with his leadership abilities.

I used to have a manager like that! Now they are gone :(
It depends from the perspective of the company and the higher ups or from the perspective of the subordinates. It makes a world for difference depending on angle of view.
