Counsel here and my comp has virtually nothing to do with my origination. It's a nice to have if I ever am looking to be promoted to partner, but the only bearing it has on my comp would be factoring into the overall very squishy equation for discretionary bonus (which considers overall contributions).

like

For 2024, my bonus (accounting for both non-discretionary based on hours and discretionary) was about 13% of my total comp. It was about 22% of my total comp for 2025, due to receiving a larger bonus. As I'm sure is true with most firms, what counsel and NEPs receive in the way of bonuses is largely a function of how small or large the pot is once management and equity partners get paid out.

0%. I’m essentially a super senior associate. Originations only matter for promotion, if I wanted to go that route.

like

It’s not formulaic like that at most places, but I got a bonus that put my all-in comp at 31% of my originations for 2025.

Thank you!

The comp model (black box or lockstep) would influence the bonus. If the firm earnings are surplus after equity partners’ allocation and other reserves are allocated, discretionary bonus structure could go upto 40% in a good year, depending on who is advocating for an NEP on the comp committee (in a blackbox with no formulaic structure)

I didn't look for other jobs at work, so I'm not sure how they could have known that unless a coworker snitched on me. Is it worth it to try and find out who or should I just leave it? Can't deny that I'm seriously pissed off about it.

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?

How can I sell my 2 years of clerkship as valuable experience for corporate work? I would like to get credit for at least one year (at least in salary, if I can’t in seniority).
