In the bigger firms especially, more on how lateral moves, even at the same level provide new challenges and make you a better rounded person to get the promotion to the next levels.
Understanding you are not on a ladder but more a chutes and ladders and those sideways slides or perceived downward slides are all part of the upward progression.
Yep someone, some ONE, will get that ladder straight to the top, but most of us experience the ups and downs in the middle.
