Bowl Leader
I’ve worked in industry, commercial consulting, and federal consulting. For me, the sweet spot is federal consulting.
Industry: I was limited in terms of growth and expertise because I only had the opportunity to work on products purchased by my firm.
Commercial Consulting: I learned a TON and sharpened my skills. I have no regrets, however the hours (and travel) were incredibly grueling and not how I want to spend the rest of my career.
Federal Consulting: Still have the ability to work for multiple customers and a plethora of technologies, yet without the sustained work/life balance strain I felt in commercial.
Industry overall for WLB. often depends on the company/ manager, but if you choose and interview wisely, better than consulting in that respect.
Consulting has a lot of moving parts, you can be on the best project, but still have to travel a lot or do a lot of business development.
Also, not having to worry about utilization is nice.
I echo on the utilization. It's a major stress overall.
I think it‘s hard to say what’s „better“ it completely depends on your personal preferences.
For me personally it‘s consulting - faster development, colleagues that you can exchange knowledge with, more fast paced, you can see a lot of different projects, companies, products. But also you can have a lot of differences based on the consultancy you are working for.
For industry it could be if you want to have your „baby“ and not let go of it after a couple of months, you are much more connected to it and have a different involvement in it because you are in this project for the long run. Everything else is dependent on the company you are in, bigger companies have bigger team, could feel more like a little consultancy. For smaller companies it could be more laid back, not that complex, more of an „easy“ job, if that’s want you want. But in the end depends completely on the setup.
