The simple one from Millionaire Next Door is:
(Age x pretax income)/10
If you have to have milestones, you’re much better going off age.
This is a very broad question and it will vary greatly as people have different COL situations, spouses who contribute and different lifestyles.
My husband and I are as one of my bosses once said savers. We could definitely do more from a lifestyle perspective, but we’ve chosen to save for retirement and we’ve made good investments. Our net worth is much higher than most people our age because we’ve planned it this way. Many people spend to keep up with the Jones’ which takes away from net worth. I have friends that make around the same amount as us, but have little to show for it because they vacation 4 times a year and spend many weekends going to Disney.
All this to say, comparison is the thief of of joy. Find what net worth you want to have at a certain age and work towards that goal. Don’t let what others are doing dictate what you will do. There are times I may be jealous now, but when I’m 55, retired and living comfortably, traveling, etc there will be people jealous of what I can do then. It’s all about desire, goals and focusing on what’s important to you.
