If I partner up, the single biggest reason would be access to new networks and resources I can’t build solo. For me, it’s about multiplying our impact, not just revenue. But I’d only do it if our values and working styles truly align, because misalignment sinks even the biggest plans.
If there's some overriding reason to do that, it's a good idea and should be pursued. Absent that, it honestly makes no sense. Trying to partner at an early stage reads as a sign of weakness, and that can be fatal. If a startup can't make it on its own, that sends a very bad message.
In my experience, if you want to go fast; go alone. If you want to go far; go with a team.
That said, there’s some variables that need to be considered here (product offering, BD approach, etc), but generally speaking your co founder is empirically correct.
Well for you to be able to do more things under a partnership rather than simply being a cofounder with a celery what additional value can you add under a partnership that you can’t add as a co-founder under a salary? One advantage to him will be I assume you possibly won’t be paid because you’re now gonna be an equal partner in the potential success of the business which would save his business the money of your salary but other than that I’d have to wonder what would be the advantage of doing so and what would be the percentage of the partnership if you’re coming into a business to have equity rights in the business which would be significant as a partner? You’re gonna have to be contributing some significant value to the business.
I would be asking the question how does he perceive the partnership structure and remuneration to work? That’s the simple question you ask? How would you perceive the partnership structure and remuneration to work in the short term and long-term?
His answer will then tell you exactly what he has in mind and then you can decide whether you find out acceptable or whether you prefer to stay under a salary cofounder scenario
