What’s a good billing description for a meeting with a partner to talk case strategy, background and procedural history of a case?

Review case history and develop litigation strategy in preparation for (filing complaint, drafting discovery, whatever it is).

I thought mine were decent, but I’m stealing this.

Literally what you just said. “Conference with [partner] to discuss background facts, procedural history and strategy moving forward.” Maybe you throw in a minor detail to remind yourself of the conversation should a question ever arise. Something like “…moving forward, including next steps in discovery and pros and cons of whatever”

"Meet with X regarding deal background and open items"

Does the client have restricted words or a billing guideline with the firm?

Some won’t let you bill for meetings (I know wild) so instead you want to omit that word and say something like “Analyze background to inform strategy for X,Y,Z”

There are lots of clients with different billing quirks. Something to be aware of and figure out where to find those guidelines if you’re junior.

Mine usually don’t like to pay for research. I will often times ask for authorization from the client to research a particular issue and explain why the claim is unique and warrants research. I have never had a client not authorize research when I’ve asked. The. I just note in the billing entry that the research was authorized to avoid it getting cut later.

Definitely look at the client billing guidelines. The majority of my clients will not pay for meetings with other attorneys on the same firm. They tend to think it should only require one attorney to strategize and do not want to pay both attorneys for “the same work.” I typically have to get a little creative with wording my entries and I try to be as specific as possible about whatever the strategy was about and what was discussed. I try to include enough details to make sure it’s something the client will want to pay an attorney to do.

Attend conference call

Strategize re ______.

I kinda do too lol but it works

Meet and confer with XX regarding litigation history to date, develop strategy and discuss next steps in support of [next deliverable, motion, whatever…].

Or

Meet and confer with XX following [call/hearing/meeting, etc.] to discuss outcome of same, how same impacts short and long term case goals, and to develop next steps/action items. Update attorneys notes and support staff regarding same.

Our system is pre-populated with what I’d assign this: intra-office conference.

Depending on whether or not you can bill for internal meetings, “Strategize [with X] re [description of the most substantive things you talked about]”

In my experience, clients hate meetings. So instead I would always say what we did at the meeting and then as “with P” at the end.

For example:
Analyze recent pleadings and develop case strategy with [partner].

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

Associates are not referred business, even cold calls, and so far “networking” events like Chamber of Commerce luncheons have been a bust.
