During work: savoring a second cup of tea/coffee/whatever, doing a short burst of physical activity (like jumping jacks)
After work: taking time out to play with my kids and give them my full attention
Sleep. Food. A shower. Physical activity. Social interaction. Meditation.
In that order, at least for my preferences
I tell myself I’m not allowed to talk down on myself for as long as I’m missing one or more of the above.
But if I have all of the above and still feeling low, I let myself to really fully throw a whole tantrum— punch a pillow, scream into a pillow, scribble until a whole page is filled up. That usually does the trick!
Remembering the amount of bills that have to be paid and that this salary helps me pay those (sadly, not entirely because I had to take a huge paycut, and while expensea have been cut and sticking to essentials, no eating out, no entertainment, no clothes, etc., it's still not enough to pay all the bills with just my salary, so still dipping into savings). And remembering how awful I felt during the ten months after a layoff with no income coming in, burning through my savings and having major things break (like the house plumbing which required an expensive whole-house repipe) and struggling to find a job in this crappy job market (I got very small severance). No matter how crappy a day I'm having in my new job, and how tempted I am to tell them to all go to hell, I remember the awful feeling those 10 months, the worry. And that helps me gain perspective, grit my teeth, and stick it through until I hit close to the 1 year mark and can move on to something else hopefully.
Ah yes. The crushing coercion of capitalism.
