I don’t give any reason for taking pto. It’s my time off, my business how I spend it. None of my manager’s business. If you’re demanding to know how your people are spending their time off, you as a manager need more things to do!
If they have the PTO available and it doesn’t impact client work, I don’t care.
I did have someone abuse the unlimited PTO policy and wasn’t requesting the time off in accordance with policy. She would just now show up or email me late the night before and it was always, always an illness- hers, her dog’s, older people in her family. That girl had so many aunts and uncles die or have extended stays in the hospital where she needed to be out to “help family”.
If they give reasonable notice and a plan to cover any immediately pressing work while they are gone the reasons don’t matter a single bit. If they are a good employee and getting their work done then I assume time off helps them recharge and come back refreshed and energized to do more good work.
