I asked an internal recruiter once, if it’s true that nobody cared about laid off people. And she said, “we know everyone eventually gets laid off, but I’m less likely to hire someone if they’re laid off at that moment, and I think a lot of people feel this way, it’s like damaged goods” And so I didn’t put it when it happened.
If I were in your position, I’d quietly hit up the network you’ve built up over twenty years first. After a month, I’d put a post out saying I’m looking for my next role. And if three months post-layoff you’re still hinting, maybe put the banner on then.
The banner is so weird. Some people think it’s proactive, others think it’s desperate. I wish we weren’t so judgmental about job-seekers.
My biggest take is: do not rely on *only* the banner. You have a lot of levers you can pull, especially with twenty years of experience.
After 20 years, I'd hope you have a wide network to help with your job search. Most people who remember you well are happy to find you anything they can. I'd put the banner up, post it to your timeline, and ask your connections if they know who's hiring. When your connections post comments in response, your announcement gets more engagement, is better promoted by the algo, and turns up in more recruiters' searches for your job title. Then, when the recruiter is looking at your post, what they (hopefully) see is a long list of people praising you under a notice that you're available.
BUT as for specific wording...I would probably not announce that I'd been laid off. Just say you're ready for your next challenge/ending your time at your old company with gratitude and excitement for what comes next, something or other about cool new opportunities and changes, blah blah blah etc. Most people will read between the lines, and appreciate you being circumspect. Also helps to avoid that stigma with recruiters, who aren't 100% sure you've been laid off.

It feels funny to put that on a profile. But at the same time, it represents just 1% of the effort needed to secure a new job in these times, so if you can get over the funny feeling, it can’t hurt.
Agree. No one is going directly to your page and if they are scanning people in search it will show you’re looking. It’s like a bat signal.
You can start by signaling open to work to recruiters without the green ring. Start there and see if anyone reaches out (that version says “I’m looking” not “I’ve been laid off”.
I got much more activity however once I swallowed my pride and went full green ring. My thinking is the economic freak out is only just getting started so rip off the band-aid and be found by as many opportunities as possible. Chances are your network genuinely wants to help you succeed.
