What’s the “secret” to doing good work in transactional (specifically securities) law? Is it as simple as taking your time, looking up rules where necessary and going through the docs slowly/making comments as needed? I feel like I rush everything and when I see comments from counsel from the other side, I realize it’s not like I didn’t know most things, but rather if I had been more deliberate I would have caught them.

Why I’m writing a serious answer to this on a Sunday evening of a long weekend is beyond me. But you come into your own as an attorney once you realize the time you spend thinking about a matter/document/issue is as valuable if not more than the time you spend on the actual work product. Writing a two page letter doesn’t take an hour, but working through all the related materials and making sure your letter answers the problem not replies to the words/request is the difference between an attorney and a law school student. Spend the time to do the work well. Think about all the transaction documents, not just the one you are marking up. Go back to the other material, walk down the hallway before sending that email. Dear g-d man THINK :)

And then my “prepare letter regarding default” is a 3 hour time entry… sometimes I through in “analyze agreement” I’m always told put less detail in my time entries but then I’m like how do I justify it. The time to go through the file that I can’t write about takes the most time.

It happened again today. I was walking from my car into a building and remembered I had forgotten to lock my car. Can anyone relate to this feeling?

2020 grad M&A/PE Associate in LCOL area thinking about moving to a ECVC/M&A boutique. I generally like the work I do and the people I work with, but I really don’t like the hours and the constant late nights and weekends. Currently on pace for 2250. Boutique I have been eyeing has billable hour requirement of 1500-1600 and comes with a 20-25% paycut. Is this a stupid idea and should I grind it out until I can move in house? Will this ruin my opportunities down the road?

I’m a second year BigLaw associate that pays market. I was offered the position at a modified salary and hourly expectation due to their expected work flow needs. I’m wondering what is the best way to approach the topic of getting on the full salary/hours. Do I wait until the bonuses are given at the end of my first year? Or bring it up at mid-year review? I won’t have any problem meeting my hourly so I’m starting to think I’m being underpaid. I’ve been reading on here that not meeting

I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now. Thoughts on making the shift?

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.
