It depends on the flow of service. If hosts and bussers actively support the guest experience, a reasonable split makes sense. Everyone contributes differently, but teamwork should be rewarded.
This is controversial for sure. Typically our hosts will bring the menus and seat the guests. If it’s ultra busy and we’re short staffed, we’ve had to ask them to grab water for guests. I kind of feel like giving them some tip is warranted, but again, it’s all dependent on how much tips servers make in the first place…
I agree with manager 1. This can be a very controversial topic. In my mind hosts and bussers should be making more than the servers who don't make minimum wage without tips. Honestly tipping culture as a whole should go away.
Great question.
At my restaurant we have implemented a 5% tipping program which I feel is reasonable.
Great speed of service/food quality ensures better tips for servers
-If you ever asked for a favor from the kitchen; a special meal change, urgent “on the fly” request, something extra for a bday
-A customer wants a specific table that’s not ready so you ask the host or bidder handle it for you
-You have a 6-top and need help running food and keeping the table clean
This is also an act of good will.
No one likes distain between FOH vs BOH, so why not just make it “normal” to share a little?
Just because it’s not done by everyone, doesn’t make it a bad practice. If anything, it demonstrates “next-level” thinking.
