If you hate the people you work with

This. The work/job is gonna suck regardless, but if you can’t stand your own colleagues and/or they tend to make your life much harder than it needs to be, that’s a clear sign to lateral. Also, if you’re being iced out of work. Also, if you’re being staffed on too much work to the point it’s impacting your health. Any deep rooted culture issues, etc.
From the perspective of a lateral, I thought it would be a nice change of pace and extend my BigLaw shelf life, but I was back to hating BigLaw within like 1.5 months of starting at the new firm. I now question whether I ever should have left my last firm. I was lateraling from a firm I kind of liked, so that’s relevant as well.

I recently lateraled as well. My prior firm was full of toxic people and made my life unnecessarily difficult. I lateraled to extend my biglaw runway. Thus far, my hours have been similar, but I am much happier because colleagues are supportive.

I truly like my firm. The people are good and kind. The work and hours are okay. My fear is that leaving could lead to poor culture or worse hours.
But I'm thinking I'll lateral if/when I relocate to PNW because my firm doesn't have an office there.
